What is HPV ?
HPV (human Papillomavirus) is a group of more than 200 related viruses. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) Worldwide. HPV can infect the skin and mucous membranes, such as the genital area, mouth, and throat.
Types of HPV :
Low-risk HPV : Causes warts on the skin or genital area but rarely leads to cancer.
High-risk HPV : Can cause cervical, anal, throat, and other cancers.
Transmission :
- Spread through direct skin-to-skin contact.
- Commonly transmitted during sexual activity (vaginal, anal, or oral).
Symptoms :
- Most people have no symptoms and may clear the infection on their own.
- Warts (genital, oral, or on hands/feet) can appear with some HPV types.
- Persistent high-risk HPV may cause abnormal cell changes that lead to cancer.
Prevention :
- HPV Vaccine : Protects against the most common cancer-causing types.
- Regular screenings (eg: Pap smear) for early detection.
Treatment :
- Warts can be treated with medication or removed.
- There is no cure for HPV itself, but the immune system often clears the infection naturally.
- Monitoring and treating abnormal cell changes can prevent cancer development.
